What would the world be like without women? A movement started by organizers of the Women’s March on Washington strives to demonstrate the importance of the roles that women play in our society and economy. As a part of the new movement “A Day Without Women,” organizers ask women to take off work on March 8, International Women’s Day. Those unable to participate are asked to avoid shopping for the day and wear red. The goal is to draw attention to women’s issues such as lower wages, sexual harassment, discrimination, and job insecurity. This day is in recognition of the importance of advocating for the rights of women and all other gender-oppressed people.

The history of International Women’s Day holds a strong significance. Although International Women’s Day has gained more attention in recent years, it was first observed in 1908 when thousands of women marched through New York City demanding shorter hours, better pay, and the right to vote. Groups of women around the world were staging their own protests throughout this time period. In 1913, a consensus was reached to observe International Women’s Day on March 8. This day was chosen as the official date around the world in commemoration of the women’s strike on this day in Petrograd, Russia in 1917. This specific demand for equality is the event that sparked the Russian Revolution.

The “Day Without Women” has sparked surprising controversy. Many say that the movement discriminates against women that cannot afford to take a day off of work. In some places, the large number of teachers requesting a day off work has forced schools to close. Some parents of children in these school districts are left frustrated and scrambling to find childcare that day. Other critics argue that some women taking off work to participate in the march leaves behind other women who will be forced to fill the gap. However, supporters of the march claim that the whole impact of the movement comes from the recognition of the inconveniences that would be caused if women did not come to work. This is one way to ensure that the labor of women across the world is not taken for granted.

The Women’s March on Washington that took place on the day after President Trump’s inauguration was intended to spark a new era of activism. A key aspect of any movement’s success is a continuation of displays of protest. This day of strikes is one event to show the power that women possess to organize these mass stages of activism. However, one-day protests alone are not enough to ensure a lasting political movement. It is critical that supporters continue to express their energy and passion by applying pressure that demonstrates activism on a national level as well in their own communities.

Thank you to all the women who were brave enough to take a day off of work in an inspirational movement for women’s rights. Thank you as well to all the women who were not able to take time away from work, but supported the movement in other ways. Together, women and our allies can act together for the human rights of all genders.
