Not only does Mr. B bring sunshine to our school, but he shines on the music world as an accomplished, published composer and trumpeter. Under Mr. Bernotas’ name, you can find countless, widely-played band pieces, a series of popular practice books, and more.

Given his many strengths, it is no surprise that Mr. B has been snatched up by Alfred Music publishing company. After this school year, Mr. B will be head editor for all strings compositions at this company. As Mr. B has put it, this job allows him to continue teaching and working with students, just in a different way. And although we cannot imagine the MLHS stage without his infectious energy, we couldn’t be happier that he is moving on to pursue his impeccable talent and passion!

As if we needed to prove how blessed we have been by his influence, we have included the following quotes from MLHS band students, explaining why Mr. B is so, so special.

What is your favorite memory of Mr. B?

Donovan Menard: His yearly Valentine’s Day advice session, which is culturally significant enough to be placed in the Library of Congress.

Mitch Tomaszek: A lesson I had this year with just him and me. He was just slingin’ jokes the whole time; it was a blast.

Lucy Horowitz: Back in fifth grade, the Wildwood band played Air Force One. Mr. G mentioned that it was by the high school band director, and I felt very accomplished when we played it because it was by an Official High School Person and because it had eighth note runs, syncopation, and accidentals (oh my!). I would try my hardest not to smile and ruin my embouchure during my favorite sections, but it was futile. For me, there have always been songs with certain parts that I couldn’t help but smile at, but Air Force One was the first such song I actually played. Air Force One was my favorite piece from all of elementary school, and I didn’t realize how important the composer would be in my life until I got to high school. Every once in a while it will get stuck in my head, and every time I think of how Mr. B has shaped my growth as a musician since I was just a fledgling flautist.

Andie Credidio: When he wore the viking hat at a HERD game.

Madison Orlofski: My favorite memory of Mr. B would have to be band lessons with him these past four years. He’s always happy to joke around and talk about our lives or show us some hilarious clip on YouTube that he found in the band teachers’ Facebook group.

Katie Stitt: Mr. B proudly displaying all of the student-made Photoshop memes on his office door.

Kristen Leba: I think my favorite memory of Mr. B is all his happy-filled emails he sends us once in a while. It’s funny to me because every time he sends one, it always happens to be a day when I’m upset about something or just not having a good day, and when I open his emails I actually smile. So thanks, Mr. B, for cheering me up

Ashley Chen: My favorite memory of Mr. B is sitting around during band lessons and talking about deep topics that should be discussed more often.

Anabelle McGinley: Meeting him for the first time and fangirling over Mythos. But since then, every Mr. B memory has been amazing.

Rebecca Reagan: Mr. B would give life advice every pit orchestra practice, ranging from eating dessert before dinner to never settling. It always brightened my day.

Nate Horowitz: Playing in the pep band with him.

Dante Sinatra: Disney 2019.

Ryan Shanker: Him laughing while Derek yells at him during lessons.

Emily Hsiang: The pit orchestra was accompanying a run-through of The Addams Family in my freshman year and, as the character Pugsley said his line, “First comes love, then comes–”, there was horrible, loud microphone feedback, then Mr. B said, “That usually does come after love.” Also, his bromance with Mr. Deamer in the pit was really fun to watch.

What would you like to say to Mr. B as he moves on to the next chapter?

Donovan Menard: I wish you the best of luck, and thank you so much for making the band experience so memorable and enjoyable!

Mitch Tomaszek: When you look up at the moon, think of me.

Andie Credidio: Everyone from MLHS is rooting for you! You are going to do great.

Madison Orlofski: Thank you for everything, for teaching me so much, and also for the fact that I never had a bad day that you couldn’t improve.

Katie Stitt: Good luck and keep making wonderful music.

Kristen Leba: Mr. B, congratulations first of all!! Everyone is so very proud of you, but it’s bittersweet. Of course we’re proud of you for being able to open up a new chapter in your life, but we’re all going to miss you. You’ve been a dad to some of us, and it’s always a great way to start our day to have you say your silly dad jokes

Ashley Chen: Good luck! You will be missed. Thank you for everything!

Vibhat Rai: All of your music is exceptional, and you already have the access to confidence you need to succeed.

Dante Sinatra: You have really helped me as a trumpet player, and I thank you for the teaching you gave me. You’re the best trumpet player I’ve ever met; I will miss you a lot.

Ryan Shanker: Good luck! I think you know a lot of music, so you’ll probably do fine, but good luck anyway!

Leon Xie: Congratulations! I hope you will be as successful at your new job as you have been here in MLHS. They are lucky to have you for sure, and I know you’ll do great things. Best of luck!

What do you wish other people knew about Mr. B? How should he be remembered?

Donovan Menard: He is extremely welcoming and inclusive, and genuinely encourages any student of any skill level to join band. His friendliness, passion, and humor are contagious and brighten up our days.

Mitch Tomaszek: He used to have an awesome mustache.

Andie Credidio: I think everyone already knows he is one of the most kind-hearted people, and I think he will be remembered for a long time.

Madison Orlofski: Other people should know how wonderful and caring Mr. B is, how he always takes an interest in us, and how he always has an interesting story to tell if you sit down and listen. I don’t know how to express how Mr. B should be remembered in this school.

Katie Stitt: He was our teacher as well as our friend.

Kristen Leba: Other people who have never taken band with Mr. B are missing out, lemme just say that. Because I’ve never met a teacher like him before. Mr. B loves all of his band students and has taken the time to get to know each of us and I think that’s pretty amazing.

Anabelle McGinley: He should be remembered as one of the best band teachers to ever lift a baton (and as a pun master).

Rebecca Reagan: Mr. B is the heart of the band program. The music department will not be the same without him.

Vibhat Rai: He is a guy you can really crack jokes and laugh with while knowing you’re constructing yourself into a better musician/person.

Dante Sinatra: His pieces of music and unbelievable trumpet playing.

Ryan Shanker: As a god-tier level band conductor with unparalleled enthusiasm for music and for teaching music to others.

Leon Xie: Not only was Mr. B a wonderful band director, but he was also someone you could always talk to.

Emily Hsiang: Maybe the pit orchestra for Beauty and the Beast wasn’t the BEST, but the pianist hired by the school that year threw a fit in front of the whole pit in which he went off to Mr. B about how unfortunately bad the pit orchestra sounded. I will never forget the way Mr. B then defended us kids to him, reminding him that we were just kids who were working hard. This instance acts as a very accurate reflection of Mr. B’s attitude towards the band program and the kids who make it up; he loves us for the effort we put in, and I believe that receiving that kind of love as a high school kid is extremely important.

How has Mr. B impacted your personal experiences and/or made the band program better?

Donovan Menard: Mr. B radiates positivity and makes band rehearsals enjoyable and stress-free while still pushing us to improve. It’s always a fantastic way to start the day.

Mitch Tomaszek: Well he pretty much introduced me to the world of music playing, I didn’t start with the band till junior year but he made me feel welcome and pushed me to improve.

Andie Credidio: Whether I talk to him about band or something personal, he always takes it to heart. The fact that he cares so, so much makes the band program so much better.

Madison Orlofski: Mr. B works tirelessly to make not only the bands that practice every day better, but also keeps the pit orchestra and jazz bands up and running. Without Mr. B, we would absolutely never make it through the entire Into the Woods soundtrack in two rehearsals, and if we did, half of us wouldn’t survive. He is so patient, helping us when we need it, but also stepping back and letting us figure it out. I will never forget him half singing half saying the lines to “both sides of the coin” from Edwin Drood.

Katie Stitt: He’s made me look forward to waking up at the crack of dawn to get to band, even when I haven’t had him as a teacher.

Kristen Leba: Mr. B just makes me happy whenever he says his corny jokes. And I think everyone should hear them.

Anabelle McGinley: I entered high school last year with the intention of quitting band after freshman year. I didn’t really love playing my flute anymore. Meeting the B’s completely changed that for me, and here I am! Mr. B is truly a great person, and super fun to be around.

Alison Quade: Before reaching MLHS band, I never appreciated music the way I do now. Mr. B has given me a reason to fully enjoy and appreciate pieces of music, and he makes learning fun. Freshman year, going into band, I didn’t know anyone else who played the flute, but Mr. B quickly squashed my anxiety through his corny jokes and pleasant attitude. I am thankful for the time I’ve had with Mr. B at MLHS!

Vibhat Rai: He has made band more of a passion for me and has fostered the seriousness of the regard I hold music in.

Alia McLaughlin: Mr. Bernotas constantly has a smile on his face and he strives to bring out the best in everyone. He takes the time to know each and every one of his students and he encourages everybody to participate and share their talents. His energetic spirit and passion for teaching reflect his dedication and care for the band program. All these great qualities make him such a memorable band teacher.

Nate Horowitz: He has helped me improve my cv drumming.

Dante Sinatra: Made me so much better and brought so many people in the program.

Ryan Shanker: I have a more renewed interest in the field of music, I listen to music differently now, and the band program has expanded since Mr. B showed up because of great word of mouth.

Leon Xie: He is a great director that keeps the entire band together. He has had a personal connection with each student and will be dearly missed by the MLHS band.

Kyla Hunter: Although I am now reluctant to admit it, when I was in seventh grade, I wanted to quit band. I asked my mom to return my rented clarinet… but when I came home from school I found out that she had bought it instead. I regretted that decision until the moment I came to Mountain Lakes and first met Mr. Bernotas. I’ve lived in four different towns and had five different band teachers, but I had never encountered a teacher who cultivates such a wonderful community in the same way as Mr. B. His genuine enthusiasm, delightful personality and endless support truly made me once again love band.

Emily Hsiang: Whenever I want to sell band to younger kids, I always tell them, that being in band is like having a home at school. And it’s totally true that returning to the band room is like having a cozy, comfortable, open home base. Without a doubt, Mr. Bernotas is the person to thank for the warm, caring environment surrounding the band program. I don’t know what it would be like to go through high school without such a positive, encouraging environment. Band is a family, and Mr. B is our dad!

Final thoughts? Inside jokes? Things to share?

Mitch Tomaszek: Good Pitch Mitch wouldn’t deserve the name if it weren’t for you, Chris my boy.

Andie Credidio: 143!

Kristen Leba: Want to hear a joke about paper? Never mind. It’s tearable.

Anabelle McGinley: We love you Mr. Bernotas! <3

There is a secret society brewing within the depths of MLHS, hidden from the public eye, yet churning out fantastical short stories, poems, and more every few weeks from the depths of MLHS’s unpredictably heated rooms. This relatively unknown little hub of literary lovers is the Creative Writing Club.

Founded by current sophomores Mika Bickford and Maya Kalapatapu, late in the 17-18 school year, the CWC was designed as a safe haven for amateur writers, so that they could improve their craft, and crowdsource fresh ideas and perspectives on & for their work in a, “safe, welcoming and accepting,” troop of students (Alia Mclaughlin, ’21). As one of its current presidents points out, “ordinarily, high school students today lack opportunities inside the classroom to fine tune and explore their creative writing capabilities, so we’ve built a space for them to do so outside of school.” The CWC wants to bring back the passion and joy in creative writing for all students, one haiku at a time.

Plus, this club is perfect for all the eccentric little critters of MLHS because, as Patipat Luangwirun (’20) puts it: “the club is perfect for you no matter how crazy you are because you can contribute your bizarre creativity with someone else’s nuance [and] if there really was an American melting pot of ideas [within MLHS], it lies within this [group of amateur writers].”

All sorts of writers, poets, short-story enthusiasts, future novelists, and just plain venters (we all gotta let off steam somehow, ya know?) join this club, contributing to the diversity of the pieces its members produce. And according to Alia Mclaughlin,”one of [her] favorite parts, besides hanging out with friends, and enjoying the delectable treats…[is that] everyone…express[es] their creativity through different ways, [and may] pour out their thoughts, [without] there [being any set] right or wrong,” way to produce their writing. Just like how everyone’s handwriting is a wee bit different, the thoughts that they put down on paper are too, allowing everyone to benefit from being exposed to the work of others.

Also, with many students fearing that with a school system so hyper focused on certain (STEM) subjects, and dismissive to others (English, History, Foreign Languages, and the list goes on…) devoting time to creative writing, instead of other (possibly STEM -related) subjects, may damage their prospects for the future (and testing). One amateur writer says that the most vital part about the CWC is that she can, “write about anything [she’d like] (such as her wonderfully adorable dog, Taffy) without sacrificing [her] grades.” Imagine if she tried to write a DBQ in sonnet form! Farewell to her GPA…

So…interested in joining the CWC?

Coming up soon, on Monday the 29th, to conclude National Poetry Month with a bang, the CWC will be hosting its very first “Celebrating Spring Poetry Slam,” after school that day. So, for those who would like to spend an afternoon performing/listening to poetry and munching on treats, this is the place for you!

Remember: Monday April 29th, after school, in room 220

Welcome to the BEST Mountaineer article you have ever read. I know we have so many talented writers and so many amazing articles, but this one involves dogs, cats, and a guinea pig, so clearly, I’m giving these writers have some competition. April 11th is National Pet Day, and I don’t have any pets, which makes this a little awkward…BUT I do have friends who own lots of pets, and I ask them for pictures all the time (even when I am not writing Mountaineer articles about them). Drawing inspiration from my favorite twitter account, @WeRateDogs (they make up situations and give the dogs ratings), we’re featuring some of our furry Lakers. And since we’re an inclusive bunch, we’ve included cats as well as dogs.

Now, I do have to say sorry because we have reached the end of the article, which means there are no more animals. But, if you liked this article and you have an animal that you want us to rate, then tweet it to us @MLMountaineer, and I will be sure to rate your dog. If I don’t, it’s because I got sued by the We Rate Dogs Twitter. Now, go hug your animal, even if it is a fish because fish need some appreciation! If you don’t have a pet, go hug a random dog/cat/guinea pig (except those airport security dogs. Take my word for it: not a good idea.)

Although often misrepresented, bats are the fascinating creatures responsible for mosquito-free summer nights and the pollination of plants from mangos to cocoa. Unfortunately, bat populations have been in steep decline over the past several years due to a fast-spreading and highly deadly virus that inhibits the bat’s ability to hibernate properly during the winter. White Nose Fungus has killed over one million bats worldwide, pushing hundreds of species dangerously close to the brink of extinction.

To help protect locally endangered bat species, the MLHS Environmental Club decided to take action by organizing bat house building workshops at RVS and Wildwood after school. Aside from producing bat houses that will provide safe habitats, the project also aimed to educate and spread awareness about threats facing lesser known endangered species.

After proposing the project idea to the Mountain Lakes Environmental Commission, the MLHS Environmental Club received a grant to buy the bat house kits. Members of the Environmental Club gathered after school in Mr. Sica’s AP Environmental room with hammers, nails, glue, and three boxes of bat house kits.

Equipped with five wooden bat houses and painting supplies, the environmental club visited the RVS green team after school to run the workshop. A group of enthusiastic students engaged with the high schoolers during a slideshow presentation on the causes and consequences of bat endangerment. Following the presentation, the students divided into smaller groups, grabbed brushes and began painting the houses in an enthusiastic frenzy.

This winter brought cold, cloudy days with a light covering of snow. Nevertheless, ski team definitely did not lack enthusiasm for the start of their season. On January 15, Ski team had their first race of many. It was a chilly night, so “the snow was slick which meant everyone went super fast on the course,” recounts Haley McLaughlin. “Girls ended up finishing second overall which is extremely impressive and exciting for our first race.”

When the ground had little to no snow in the early weeks, the team started out with exercises varying from running to “Keefer exercises” to volleyball. “It is a great way to start the season because all the kids are just getting to know each other and the coaches really make each workout fun. Then once the mountain opens up we train there every day of the week except Fridays,” Haley McLaughlin explains.

In addition, I was fortunate enough to talk with THE Coach Keefer, as everyone calls him. Knowing that Coach Keith was a passionate skier himself, two parents asked him to create a racing program thirty two years ago. Back in Germany when Coach Keith was in the army, he was intrigued by the learn-how-to-ski program at the German-Swiss border. It was “cheap for a week” and that’s when Coach Keith first learned to ski at twenty two years old. Coach Keith was able to learn great skiing technique because of his intense ski instructor, a mountain climber who would make his students climb back up the mountain. Being a skier himself, Coach Keith has skied all over the world, but his favorite place to ski is Zimat, Germany.

Skiing brings Coach Keith joy as well as seeing the camaraderie built among each member of the team. He is excited about each teammate’s dedication and individual talents that always shows in unexpected ways. If Coach Keith had to pick a favorite memory from all his years of coaching, it would be winning the championship five times. He says it is very intense when there are the last two skiers racing for the best time.

Like all sports, ski team offers many opportunities on and off the slope to bond with your teammates. Haley McLaughlin, who is a junior and a captain of the MLHSST says that their best bonding happens on the way up to the mountain when the team is jamming out to music on the bus. Halle Kimball, a senior and also a captain of MLHSST says how music helps bring up the morale of the team. Ski team “encourages us to our best and get on the slopes as much as possible,” comments freshman Isabel Reinebach. Senior Wesley Hemgreen adds that “there is always room for improvement.”

Many teammates, including junior Rowan Menard feel that “it’s more relaxed and less intense than other teams and it’s different than other sports because everyday we’re skiing and we don’t just have to go to practices in a gym or field.” When asked how it feels to be racing down the hill, Halle Kimball reveals how “the feeling of adrenaline and accomplishment after a race is always an unimpressionable feeling” After a race, Halle “loves how the team is so positive and are just as happy as you are when you do well in practice or a race.”

Another aspect of what makes ski team special are the coaches who push the team members to do their best and care deeply for each and every member. Haley McLaughlin shares that the coaches are all so helpful on and off the mountain. “I’m not sure if there is another Coach in the High School who cares as much about their students as Coach Schmidt. She is always there helping us out and has the biggest heart in the world. She is a big reason why I continue to race and love it so much.”

With many more races to come, ski team has had a very successful season so far. Everyone joins a team sport or activity because of the bonds built, the support, and the lessons learned from joining the sport. Ski team is filled with people who support everyone, welcomes people old and new, and form bonds “unlike those of any other sport at MLHS.”

In the wake of the Harvard admissions lawsuit, many Asian-Americans are questioning their status in society. Asian applicants have been characterized as “quiet” and “studious” and have scored disproportionately lower on the personality test than white, Hispanic, and black applicants. Asians seem to suffer from affirmative action, a policy initially implemented to help minorities, prompting political discourse within the community.

The Harvard lawsuit is much larger than it seems; it defines the struggles of the Asian-American experience. In the midst of such a racially-divided period, many Asians feel isolated, stereotyped, and ultimately disenfranchised. Racial identities seem to be evolving, and the Asian experience twenty years ago seems to be quite different from its current reality. This ever-changing racial identity is often overlooked; thus, we’ve decided to interview a handful of students to begin exploring the Asian experience in Mountain Lakes.

Interview With Melody Fu (’19)

Do you think your race has affected how people perceive or treat you in ML?

I think in perception but definitely not treatment. It’s in millennial culture to be politically correct.

Do you think your accomplishments are often overlooked due to your race?

I don’t think they are overlooked, but there is an expectation for Asians to be intelligent. Eventually, once you prove yourself there, people start having expectations for you to keep it up.

Do you think people believe you to be interchangeable with other Asians?

Not really. Well, maybe people who don’t know us. On a surface level maybe; however, if you actually know us, then you will know our different personalities. However, people who don’t know me sometimes refer to me as other Asian students in the grade.

Do you have any specific experiences which you would like to mention?

I like some aspects of being Asian; I can speak Chinese with my Chinese friends.

What other aspects of being Asian do you enjoy or what aspects do you dislike?

The fact is that I am proud of my race, so there is nothing I dislike about my race, so if people are uncomfortable with their race in such a non-diverse town, it’s better to accept that in high school since it’s something you can never change. Regardless of how people treat you, it doesn’t matter. Even if you do live in a bubble, the real world does have diversity. Being in such a white-washed town, you have to assimilate yourself with the people around you.

Do you think being Asian in ML is an isolating experience?

I’ve always have Asian friends, so I cannot relate. To be completely honest, I’ve stopped caring. When you care all the time about what other people think of you, it just consumes too much energy. I think there are much worse places to be, but there are also better places to be.

Would your prefer living in another area with more diversity?

Yes, that’s why I look forward to college. It offers a lot of diversity: socioeconomic, racial, thought.

Interview With David Zheng (’19)

Do you think your experience in Mountain Lakes has been a positive one? Has it changed?

It’s been the same since 6th grade. I didn’t notice anything; I came here from Montville and did not notice a change.

Do you think your race has affected how people perceive or treat you in ML?

No, not all. Besides the occasional Asian joke, nothing of malice.

Do you think your accomplishments are often overlooked due to your race?

I don’t care what other people think of me. I haven’t noticed because I don’t care.

Are their any misperceptions about race in Mountain Lakes?

There is some diversity in Mountain Lakes.

Do you think being Asian in ML is an isolating experience?

Only if you search for discrimination. It’s only isolating if you want to make it. Political correctness may ruin the experience for some.

Interview with Maimoonah Shafqat (’20)

Do you think your experience in Mountain Lakes has been a positive one?

It became more positive over time. The more you get into high school you get stressed. In middle school, fitting in was hard. My race played a role in fitting in, lumped in with the brown people (South Asian). I feel like this may be positive, I was assumed to be smart and many assumed I had to be friends with the brown people. People judged before anyone else could meet me.

Do you think your race has affected how people perceive or treat you in ML?

Yeah. I think–stereotypes. All Asians are smart, etc. People break it down to your race.

Do you think your accomplishments are often overlooked due to your race?

Yeah, not saying that it’s necessarily a bad thing. Lots of my friends are Asian, we consider ourselves intelligent, however, many people assume it’s because of our race. We’re viewed more for our race than our grades and accomplishments.

Do you have any specific experiences which you would like to mention?

My religion is a big part of my experience. Nothing academically. There have been incidents in which some very close friends of mine have made the point that Asian students receive special treatment because of their race or that teachers give them special opportunities. I think that it is the opposite of that. I think its my peers who have done that. It’s been incredibly hurtful when people assume that my hard work is just a part of my culture/race. It’s part of me.

Are there any aspects of being Asian in Mountain Lakes that you enjoy?

Although there is a small Asian community, I think they are super friendly and understanding and can relate to my problems. Even my non-Asian friends can agree and understand my experience and where I’m coming from.

Should there be more communication between non-Asians and Asians?

I’ve realized throughout my time in ML specifically, a lot of people do not say it out loud, but they do have this side of them that thinks certain races are better at certain things or are given more opportunities. I really think we need to defeat this stereotype and the only way it can be done is through communicating our experiences.

Do you think being Asian in ML is an isolating experience?

Yes. I know I mentioned that there is an Asian community; however, it’s really small and ML is overwhelmingly white, and have had mostly similar experiences growing up. It’s really difficult sometimes because I feel left out trying to relate to their experiences and they sometimes cannot relate to mine.

Final Thoughts:

Evidently, every Asian person in Mountain Lakes will not have the same experiences. Yet, it cannot be denied that growing up in a town with a lack of diversity affects people, no matter how minute the effect may be. As news of the Harvard discrimination case spreads and its impact is eventually felt, it is worthwhile to consider the perceptions of Asians living in communities like Mountain Lakes. The goal is to start an honest, open, and very necessary discussion about the model minority myth and how it effects Asians in America.

Death of the #MeToo Movement

By Ruhaan Mutsuddi

One year ago, several women came forward to identify former American film producer Harvey Weinstein as the perpetrator of heinous sexual crimes. This singular case sparked the beginning of the #MeToo movement. Empowered, many women–and some men, too–sprang forward to identify celebrities, businessmen and even former bosses who had engaged in sexual misconduct. The #MeToo movement granted victims a voice, a platform, and an audience who would listen. It seemed as if the world was changing, evolving into a place where those in positions of power were no longer unchecked.

However, as the senate moves forward with the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, it seems as if the progress of the #MeToo movement was not enough. The decision of the Republican dominated senate sends a distinct message: there is a time and place for women to identify their abusers, and only if it fits an agenda. The confirmation of Kavanaugh is not just a slap in the face to the #MeToo movement; it signifies the end of its impact.

Prior to politics, the #MeToo movement remained in what seemed like a distant place: Hollywood. It was no surprise that this was the case; old men grooming young girls as they tried to be the next Drew Barrymore or Cameron Diaz was quite a believable story. However, once it touched the political sphere, the #MeToo movement lost its momentum.

With new concerns such as “Has the #MeToo movement gone too far?” it seems as if political figures are untouchable. Even President Trump acknowledged this, tweeting “it’s a very scary time in America for young men,” perpetuating the notion that being accused of sexual assault is more damaging than the action itself. The trend of political figures being untouchable is simply unbreakable, even for the mighty force that was once the #MeToo movement. From President Trump’s infamous Inside Hollywood tape to the confirmation of Brett Kavanaugh, it seems as if the political sphere does not bend to the rules of decency.

Kavanaugh’s Confirmation

By Spencer Waas

In the United States of America, the basis of our judicial system is the premise that a person is innocent until proven guilty and is afforded due process. People in our country possess the freedom to make accusations, but there must be proof to support it.

On September 16, 2018, Christine Blasey Ford accused Supreme Court nominee Brett Kavanaugh of sexual assault. To this day, there has been no corroboration of her allegation. Democrats and a few Republicans in the Senate were quick to believe her claim even though there has been no evidence that this has happened. I am not saying that Christine Blasey Ford is wrong, but I am saying that everyone in America should keep an open mind. The America where people can accuse anyone without confirmation is not the America that I know and love. We maintain a system in this nation and jumping to conclusions that one of the most qualified Supreme Court nominees has carried out this terrible act is completely wrong.

On Thursday, September 27, Christine Blasey Ford and Brett Kavanaugh testified in front of the Senate Judiciary Committee. After hearing her story, I do believe that she is credible. However, another reasonable analysis of her testimony requires noting that she has many gaps in her recollection and her story. Brett Kavanaugh’s testimony showed that he was willing to fight for his life to clear his name and reputation to secure a seat on the Supreme Court. While some may call him aggressive, I say he was admirable. He accomplished exactly what he had to in this type of situation. It is absolutely rational for a man who has had his life ruined, his family ridiculed and threatened, and his name tarnished to go out swinging instead of taking it.

Both testimonies were extremely moving, but with the FBI Investigation completed on Thursday, October 4, it is clear that there is no evidence of Brett Kavanaugh ever sexually assaulting Christine Blasey Ford and he should promptly be confirmed as an Associate Justice on the Supreme Court. The events over the past several weeks only serve to highlight how important “innocent until proven guilty” really is to the foundation of our justice system.

A Republican’s View

On March 8, President Donald Trump signed a tariff of 25% on steel and 10% on aluminum, which was enacted 15 days later. This tariff is aimed directly at China and excludes Mexico and Canada, as they are important regional neighbors to the US. The world is on the edge of its seat, waiting for these countries to respond. Are we on the verge of an economic World War III?

In the event of the most extreme outcome that no trade occurs, the US would not see any more lavish Moroccan carpets; no more Canadian maple syrup; no more Colombian coffee; no more French wine; and no more Italian pasta. Without the ability to export their products to foreign countries, these businesses would face economic hardship and, as a result, only the companies that could thrive within their own countries would survive. Furthermore, the US would not be able to export wheat and other commodities, putting millions of Americans out of work.

If this full-on trade war became a reality, this is the miserable world that we would be living in. To be fair, an economic World War III does not seem to be the most likely result, but Trump’s imposition of this tariff still presents a highly complex situation with multiple other possible outcomes.

It should be acknowledged that America is a proud capitalist country, so tariffs, both generally and in regards to this specific one, go against these core beliefs. Eighteenth century economist, Adam Smith believed that competition and self-interest would be the “invisible hand” in what was dubbed laissez-faire economics. These are the principles that America has been built on for much of its existence.

Right before the tariff was enacted, Trump tweeted:

“Our Steel and Aluminum industries (and many others) have been decimated by decades of unfair trade and bad policy with countries from around the world. We must not let our country, companies and workers be taken advantage of any longer. We want free, fair and SMART TRADE!”

Treasury Secretary Mnuchin discusses Trump’s plan with dealing with a trade war with China:

I would like to look more specifically at the last clause about “free, fair, and smart trade.” First, trade cannot be “free” if unequal tariffs are pressed on certain countries.

Next, when Trump mentions “fair” trade, he is referencing the fact that this tariff actually attempts to level the playing field with China; China has a 25% tariff on automobiles, while the US’s is only 2.5%. In addition to the tariff on automobiles, China has harshly imposed numerous other tariffs on the US that are unequal in amount to the tariffs that theUS has imposed on China. That being said, Trump is using this tariff as a way of telling China that unfair trade will not be tolerated.

Finally, whether or not this move by Trump turns out to be “smart” is yet to be determined. If a full-blown trade war erupts, as many economists have predicted, and tariffs become so high that globalization ceases to exist, then this would turn out to be a horrendous course of action. On the contrary, if China were to lower their excessive tariffs, than this course of action would be seen as a powerful and successful move by the US. There really is no way of knowing the final outcome of this tariff, but I believe that China will renegotiate some of their tariffs and give in to the US before they start a trade war.

Trump imposed this tariff for two main reasons: to stimulate the US economy and to make things even with China. Tariffs can almost be viewed as giving someone a head start in a race. Years ago, Chinese tariffs were imposed because the US wanted to help out a struggling Chinese economy. Today, the Chinese economy no longer needs a head start, and Trump is doing what he believes is the best tactic to combat this.

Different presidents would have had different approaches to solving a problem as such. President Obama, for example, would have negotiated by drawing a line in the sand and then stepping back and redrawing it numerous times before reaching an agreement. Trump’s approach is different in that he plans on negotiating after inflicting a forceful blow to China. In that sense, he has grabbed China’s attention and showed them that he is serious about negotiating. Only time will tell if Trump’s bold negotiating tactics will provide positive results, but if Chinese president Xi Jinping’s recent pledge to lower automobile tariffs is any indication of things to come, then it should yield success.

A Democrat’s View

Recently, the Trump administration imposed a series of tariffs on exports from China. Claiming that it is essential to punish China regarding their controversial trade practices, the United States now has a 25% tariff on varying Chinese products. China retaliated with a series of tariffs on U.S. products, costing a staggering $50 billion to the US economy. Not only is this move by Trump economically dangerous, it also compromises his campaign promises.

During his campaign trail, Trump promised rural voters that they would be represented in the White House and have more of a say in affairs in DC. These trade tariffs do the complete opposite, however. Farmers in rural areas are at a disadvantage because rising tariffs lower profits and strain their relationship with customers abroad. In fact, initiating a trade war with China can prove to be lethal, as upcoming elections in farming states can take a massive turn against Republicans.

However, the strain this trade war puts on American farmers does not end here. Beijing has promised to inflict another series of tariffs in retaliation. These tariffs would target even more agricultural commodities, such as soybeans. Not only would this severely hurt farmers in the Midwest and betray his campaign promises, but it is a war that America cannot win.

Trump believes that America’s huge trade deficit with China is enough to win this trade war, but, truthfully, China is still in a stable position, economically and politically. The notion that China has more to lose in this trade war is simply wrong. China’s economic susceptibility is highly exaggerated, while America’s is higher than what most people presume. Last year, U.S. imports from China amounted to approximately $506 billion, which is four times the number of exports from China. The United States sold $38 billion in addition to this, however, which accounts for its largest bilateral surplus.

On top of this, the majority of products that the US exports to China are simply agricultural goods, but 37% of imports from China are mechanical products; American-based corporations heavily rely on these mechanical goods, when it comes to manufacturing their products. In the long run, American manufacturers would be hurt by this tariff more than any industry in China would be.

Straying away from the trade policies of his campaign, in which he promised lower foreign tariffs, Trump has managed to enter the United States into a state of economic warfare that it cannot win. In doing so, American manufacturers and farmers will undergo a severe drought in sales and will have to adapt to the changing economy under the Trump administration. The current administration has strayed away from the free trade policies that this nation was founded under and continues to institute policies that will tarnish the US economy.
