Read Time:2 Minute, 52 Second

Pieces of Us is a trilogy of poems written about human connection. Each poem explores a different type of relationship–one that fades, one that is never returned, and one that reminds us not to let moments slip away.

Was it Really Forever?

“Was it Really Forever” is a poem expressing the struggle of growing apart from a childhood best friend. It talks about how people change as they grow older; even though, sometimes it is what needs to happen in order for people to grow and learn.

We used to be so close.
We used to hangout every day.

I’d come running to your steps,
and you’d let me stay.

We built forts out of couch cushions,
spending hours on the floor,
making colorful friendship bracelets,
spelling best friends forever.

Forever—
That is quite a long time.
I did not know forever
would end at the age of nine.

We use to be so close
it seems, you’ve drifted away.
I really do miss you,
but I could not bear
to ask you to stay.

You smile with your new friends,
not a drop of loneliness
in your eyes.

I do feel happy for you,
I do wish you the best.
But, who will have my back
or
bake with me for hours?
Who will make me laugh
or
talk with me all day?

I guess that’s just the way life goes.
Forever means a moment.

So I toss my bracelet in the box,
trapped away in my closet,
not because that love was fake,
just sometimes
even the brightest colors
fade.

Elusive Love

“Elusive Love” is a poem that represents an yearning love for someone that does not reciprocate it. It hints upon factors of the world that play into this idea

Billions of puzzle pieces,
with no matching pair.

How can a heart like hers
be so desperate and bare?

She tries to stand out:
doing her makeup
and fixing her hair.

Ensuring every blonde strand
fits perfectly in its place…
so that one day,
just one day,
he will glance at her face.

But her heart is so full of love-
How can he not see?
Perhaps,
his eyes were blinded by
the lies of society.

So instead of being admired
for her loving soul
and perfect hair…

She just sits there.
Dreaming.

Dreaming of a moment,
where he’ll finally care.

The Stories We’ll Tell

Now is the time to enjoy moments with your friends. Go on the late night drives or to those football games. Time will fly by in an instant, and when we look back on these days, the memories of these moments will be the only thing that stays.

The world is what you make of it—
not just what you hear,
with TikTok and Instagram
all ringing in our ears.

So get out.
And go!
Have fun with your friends,
so that one day
you can say,
what a fun time it’s been,
and not be left wondering,
Where am I going?
No…where have I been?

The journey can’t be over—
it’s only just begun!

Yet, so often we sit there,
glancing over at the time,
not realizing
the clock will keep on ticking
while our lives pass by.

Time is not promised.
It’s a privilege that we’re given.
So never let your moments be forsaken.

Because someday,
when all’s said and done,
our kids will ask for bedtime stories.
And what a shame it would be
to say—
“I have none”.
