Despite Friday night’s bone-chilling temperatures, winter formal proved to be a success. MLHS students were greeted by the warmth of the Rockaway River Country Club and took their seats at tables with twenties-themed centerpieces. The party was instantly started by the hype man, a self-proclaimed Wiz Khalifa and Childish Gambino look-alike, who urged everyone up out of their seats onto the dance floor.
The DJ’s stellar setlist, which consisted of party classics and the latest hits, coupled with the hype man’s superb moves and entertaining commentary made the dance floor the spot to be. For those who wanted a break from dancing, the photo booth acted as the perfect escape. Groups of friends posed for a series of pictures with fun props, such as boas, and were provided with printed strips of these photos as mementos of the evening.

Soon it was time for arguably one of the best parts of formal: the food. Students lined up in an adjoining room, which housed a buffet consisting of various types of pasta, vegetables, meat, and fish. This was one of the only times during which the dance floor was left empty. However, most people didn’t last long sitting still in their chairs, as the DJ’s music only improved throughout the night. “Dancing Queen,” “Gold Digger,” and “Mr. Brightside” were just a few of the songs which produced squeals of excitement; the crowd belted every word in unison.
The array of desserts which were served, including ice cream, cookies, and bite-sized cakes, only made the night sweeter. Energized by the sugary treats, students showed off their dance skills in a dance circle. For both participants and spectators, the circle brought an extra element of fun to everyone’s evening.
The final ten minutes of winter formal were filled with last second photo booth shots and passionate dancing. As the beloved hype man announced that the night was coming to a close, students rushed to put on their coats, prepared to brace the bitter cold once again. With great food, music, entertainment, and ambiance, this year’s winter formal was a truly memorable experience.
