If you haven’t seen the newest musical movie hit La La Land then you should definitely add it to your to-do list. While the movie itself was well-worth it, the soundtrack was even better than the movie was.

La La Land opened up with an upbeat song and dance called “Another Day of Sun.” The scene is filled with young dancers in Los Angeles who sing about Hollywood’s glamor and following their dreams. It is an energy-filled, optimistic beginning to the movie, with lyrics like, “Climb these hills, I’m reaching for the heights and chasing all the lights that shine, and when they let you down, you’ll get up off the ground, ’cause morning rolls around and it’s another day of sun.”

Once Mia and Sebastian (Emma Stone and Ryan Gosling) meet, they quickly hit it off and sing “A Lovely Night.” The song is a duet where Mia and Sebastian trade off phrases about how they would never fall for one another; thus the beautiful view in front of them is a “waste of a lovely night.” Gosling sings, “We’ve stumbled on a view that’s tailor-made for two, what a shame those two are you and me,” to which Stone responds “And though you looked so cute in your polyester suit, you’re right, I’d never fall for you at all.”

Their musical banter and flirting is fun to watch because the two obviously are already falling for one another while singing about how they never would. While neither of their voices are spectacular, they both are able to sing well enough so as to not negatively affect the music. However, the playfulness of the lyrics and the chemistry between the two characters in “A Lovely Night” is what makes it one of the best scenes in the film.

My personal favorite is “City of Stars”, which is repeated multiple times throughout the film. On one specific occasion, Stone and Gosling sing it together while Gosling plays the piano accompaniment. Once again, their voices aren’t what gives the scene its sense of love, but rather the relationship between the two characters that does. Mia and Sebastian have a goofy and genuine relationship which can be seen in all of its glory in this particular scene.

The lyrics, which sing, “That now our dreams, They’ve finally come true, City of stars, Just one thing everybody wants, There in the bars and through the smokescreen of the crowded restaurants. It’s love. Yes, all we’re looking for is love from someone else.”

Ultimately, the music in La La Land was filled with songs with beautiful notes and messages. At the end of it all, the music is what makes the movie: it fills in the spot where words simply cannot suffice.
