James “Jimbo” Arelli is your typical senior at MLHS. He gets good grades, he plays sports, he has friends. He’s bright and bubbly, and his smile lights up the whole room. But you’ll never see his face light up like when he gets a text from his mom during class.

“His mother must truly love him, you know?” says senior Mike Donnelly, a good friend of Jimbo. “She’s constantly texting him in class. He picked up his phone, like, twenty times today in Calculus.”

Classmates of Jimbo know how exciting these texts can be. Sometimes Jimbo’s phone produces (very loud) sound effects—explosions, TikTok audio, 2048 tiles, and the like. Some teachers speculate that this is his ringtone, which he changes every day so he doesn’t forget to text his mother back.

We got in touch with Jimbo’s mother, Kimberly “Kimbo” Arelli, about her relationship with her son.

Pleased to meet you, Mrs. Arelli. How would you describe your daily conversations with your son?

Well, uhh…I guess I talk to him when he gets home from school. We talk during family dinners if that counts.

Right, right. And what do you do for a living?

I’m a doctor. I work from 8 AM until 6 at night.

Oh, okay. So how do you take the time to text your son throughout the day?

I’m sorry, what?

Do you text your son during the day?

No, of course not. He has class during the day.

Are you sure?

Yes, I am sure.

Are you lying to me?

Excuse me?

Kimbo could not be reached for further questioning. We suspect she was too shy to share the intimate conversations she has with her beloved son during the day.

Jimbo is also an expert note-taker. He skillfully jots down the lesson plans on his laptop using only the four arrow keys. Students have noticed that the light projecting from his laptop screen turns his face red, yellow, purple, and green. Evidently, Jimbo color-codes his notes, a very good strategy for digital note-takers.
