Music encircles us – it plays in shops, in headphones, at parties, and quite literally everywhere in between. It’s even playing right now in this coffee shop I’m at. As a person who even falls asleep to music, I hardly ever have a moment of silence in day-to-day life. Most people enjoy music and never look further into it. But once you dive beyond the surface, music provides unseen benefits, some being quite surprising.

From country anthems to concerts to finding commonalities between friends, music brings people together. But, how can it affect us individually?

Some people swear by silence when doing homework, but a study by Bottiroli et al. found that “[t]hose who were listening to classical music outperformed those who worked in silence or with white noise.”  While music cannot revert memory loss from some diseases, it has the ability to slow down the process.

Music additionally aids afflictions of mental illness. People who have ADHD and who lack the chemical dopamine can gain it by listening to music. Music can decrease cortisol, a stress hormone, and anxiety, as some studies have shown that “…people in rehab after a stroke are more relaxed once they’ve listened to music for an hour.”

And if you’re a person who likes to dance to music, there’s good news for you! Dancing along to your favorite song increases “…your breath rate, your heart rate, and your blood pressure.” Driving along the highway with the windows down and music up also boosts mood and energy.

So, the next time someone convinces you to lower the volume or take out your headphones, just let them know a few of these facts, and surely they’ll want to listen with you!
