IT’S HERE!!! Mischief Night, the night of witches, All Saint Eve, the hungry ghost festival, Hallows Eve, the twilight of terror – not the book, but… HALLOWEEN!!!

It is a time-honored tradition in Mountain Lakes, on October 31st, for every child in town to gather in the Village for fun, food, and candy. In Boonton Township the tradition is to go to the Trunk-or-Treat for a night full of trick-or-treating, games, and TONS of COSTUMES!

The Stigma Against The Spooky Season

This Halloween, I want to dive into the discussion of the stigma against older children trick-or-treating. Those of us in highschool might have noticed that we seem to be excluded from this merry band of dressed up, smiling, candy-crunching children. I ask: why is that?

Well I am going to explore this question further. To start, this stigma against high schoolers, or generally anyone over the ages of elementary to late middle school, is an idea that has been around for a long time. To go out in full costume and ask for candy as a child over the age of about 13  is to be looked upon as “immature” and “silly.” Many sources have confirmed that trick-or-treating is not something that is common at a high school age, and instead of trick-or-treating, many high schoolers prefer to go to parties or even just stay home and do homework.

While this is a sad thought, the other side of this argument, that this stigma should stay in place, is perfectly valid. The magic of the night of mischief is a gift that should be passed on to every generation by those who have already had their time to experience and enjoy this same excitement and fun. It is now our time, as high schoolers, to show those younger than ourselves how magical (and mysterious) this night can really be!

No matter the argument, Halloween is a night that should be enjoyed by every generation, whether that be by dressing up as princesses and finding your spinning wheel weakness (mine is Reese’s peanut butter cups, Yum!), going to a party and hanging out with your very own witches and wizards, or even just staying home and watching a spooky movie. Halloween is a holiday meant to be enjoyed and celebrated with full conviction!

Need Some Costume Inspiration?

Now for the best part! Here is the insight on the best costume ideas for 2019!

Sources have confirmed that over the years a Christmas present, the blow-up dinosaur, a PARCC/SAT test, and the Giant Frappuccino are the best costumes seen.

One source even reported that this year they are planning on being “a man going through a midlife crisis [with] hole-ridden socks, old zip-up sweater, and stained t-shirt with, of course, ugly boxers instead of pants.”
