This past week, Mountain Lakes exchange students from Amsterdam came to our school and taught us about their culture. They had a really unique clothing style that was inspirational to all. We conducted an interview with the exchange student, Pieter van Wissen where he talked about his outfits. We asked him a few questions about his top outfit choices and his responses were very specific!

Pieter said that his favorite outfit was a “black t-shirt that was knitted from the store Men at Work, blue jeans with white scratches on them and ultra-boost Adidas sneakers from Flight Club.” He came to the conclusion that his outfit would be considered dressy casual. We also asked Suzanna about her fashion sense, and she explained that her go-to outfit was a “blouse, jeans, and some booties or white sneakers.” Americans are known for being lazy and not trying to ‘dress to impress’. In the Netherlands, most people put a lot of thought into their outfits and pride themselves on their  style.

Since we loved their sense of fashion, we asked Pieter about some of the popular Dutch clothing brands – Pieter stated that the top stores in Europe are H&M (that actually originated in the Netherlands), Primark, Zara, Scotch and Soda Amsterdam Deluxe, Gucci, Louis Vuitton, and Canada. In America, people usually wear leggings or jeans and a regular T-shirt or a sweatshirt. In Amsterdam, the common outfit is a dress, a skirt, or a dressy casual outfit. Upon visiting an American high school for the first time, some of the Dutch students were thrown off by America’s more laid back look (which finds itself to be ESPECIALLY prevalent in a high school)

The Dutch Exchange Students Visit NYC

When asked about American high school student fashion, Suzanne explained that she was very confused about the fact that many girls wore leggings to school. She commented on how it looked like many students just rolled out of bed, and how this casual look would be strange and questioned back at her school in the Netherlands.

It seems as though the Dutch express themselves more through their clothing than Americans do because as American high school students, we often value comfort over style. However, despite disagreeing with some of America’s fashion trends, the Dutch loved shopping in New York City at popular stores such as Urban Outfitters and Lush. They had a great time at Mountain Lakes!
