In an area rich with restaurants, Sazón Latino stands out as a modest and well-priced restaurant with delicious Latin food. Sitting on the intersection of Main Street and Myrtle Avenue in Boonton, it offers a welcoming change from your typical steak, hamburgers, and sandwiches. Sazón Latino offers delicious, authentic, and affordable Latin American food, with choices sure to please everyone. It was recently named one of NJ.com’s 33 Places to Eat Like a King on a Pauper’s Budget, an award which I think is well-deserved.  This honor highlights how we are lucky to have this local and acclaimed restaurant just a few minutes away from Mountain Lakes.

Sazón Latino has quite a home-y quality to it: the food is what you would expect from a dinner at a friend’s or relative’s home. The restaurant is cozy, and the line to order can be long at times, so it is best to go at off-hours. Parking is available in front of the restaurant on Main Street or in the back, where there is a small parking lot. The owner is very friendly, as are the staff. There is a limited dining area in the front, but take-out is also an option. The menu is entirely different every day, though you will always find choices of white and yellow rice, beans, and sides, including plantains and fried yucca (a type of potato). For the main courses, there is typically a choice of roast chicken stew, beef stew, ribs, roast chicken, pork chops, fried chicken, chorizo, fish, pulled pork (which sometimes has to be requested from the back), and more. Beef empanadas are homemade and have a nice flaky crust. Sides include salsa and coleslaw. Soups are also available.

My favorite meal is yellow rice, black beans, pulled pork, and yucca. A side of beef empanadas goes well with this main meal. This totals to about $10 and is a satisfying, filling, and delicious meal option. The portions are fairly generous given the prices, and you will see customers of all different backgrounds in this bustling restaurant. “Tres leches” cake, kept in a small refrigerator near the counter, is homemade and offers a nice alternative to more traditional cakes. Tres leches cake, or “three milks,” is composed of a light cake soaked in a combination of condensed milk, evaporated milk, and whole milk, topped with whipped cream. It is a treat to have at Sazón Latino and a nice way to top off an authentic Latin meal. If you haven’t had a chance to sample Latin food or would like to try something new, Sazón Latino is a terrific way to explore a different cuisine while staying close to home.
