Ever since the invention of the internet, schools have been using it in some way or another, from online textbooks to video calls to playing games. Modern technology such as this has had astounding positive effects on school, but has also had its share of negative side effects. In the last 20 or so years, technology has changed education as a whole, with most students using the internet in many classes and even using phones in class. Technology has enabled more interactive learning and has given thousands better education opportunities.

The advent of technology into the education system has had a plethora of positive side effects. One of which is the expanded access to education. Students now can learn from thousands of websites and books online as well as from videos. Before the internet, students would learn from textbooks and their teachers, and were not able to branch out and learn much outside the classroom. Technology also helps students prepare for the future. Many careers in the modern world revolve around technology in one way or another, from computer programmers to engineers to teachers, who will all have to know how to use technology like computers and machines. In school, students learn programming and engineering, which will help them in the long run. According to a study published by Arkansas Tech University, students who used technology a lot were found to have improved science and math skills.

Although technology can have positive effects, it is important not to overlook the negative effects. Technology can be a massive distraction in an educational setting and can take away from learning. Students have tendencies to play video games on their computers or phones, which causes them to not pay attention. Websites and apps like YouTube or TikTok also lower attention spans, which makes it difficult for students to focus in class. The biggest issue with modern technology is that now, since many assignments are either done online or at home, that makes it very easy for students to cheat. Resources such as Google can supply students with answers and AI chatbots, such as ChatGPT, can even write flawless essays for students. These could have disastrous effects on learning due to students not paying attention in class, and then not even doing their homework later, but searching up the answers.

In conclusion, technology can have both positive and negative effects in a learning environment. Students must learn how to use it responsibly in order to best help them and increase their skills. Remember, technology is a learning tool, use it that way.
