As winter approaches, everyone often feels that “winter gloom.” Runny noses, dry skin, and chapped lips are the hit look for everyone, while dresses and skirts seem to disappear until springtime comes. It seems that a cute outfit is nearly impossible to achieve without running the risk of catching a cold. Maybe winter does not mean trading your entire closet for a drab one…

Trend #1: Layering

While the weather may be dropping below zero outside, every MLHS student knows that the school is always a toasty 75 degrees. One way to balance out this difference is layering. John Martinson (‘20) graciously allowed me to use a picture of him as an example of how layering adds warmth and dimension to a basic outfit.  Light, cropped jackets allow you to layer without making an outfit look too bulky.

Sydney Pecarific (‘20) layered a cropped green jacket over a tank top, adding color and comfort to her look. You can find a similar style of jacket here and here.

Trend #2: Patterned Pants

I love a simple pair of black jeans with a patterned top, but in the past couple years, I’ve noticed patterned pants surging in popularity. I prefer to wear these pants with a basic black or white top as a reversal of the usual style of plain jeans with a patterned top. Here are a few of my favorite pairs of patterned pants, including floral, grid, and striped patterns. You can find styles of tapered, fitted pants here, and flowy pants here. Floral pants are perfect for summer, but in winter, you can wear a pair of grid patterned pants with a plain sweater, like I am in the picture below!

Trend #3: Over the Knee Boots

This style has been popular since the 1960s, when hemlines became shorter. It has returned in full force over the past few years and is worn with pants, skirts, and dresses. I love these boots for winter because they keep your legs really warm and give the illusion of long legs. Julia Gentile (‘20) is wearing black suede over the knee boots with a tie detail in the back. I paired my over the knee boots with black corduroy pants and an oversized sweater. These boots are usually made of suede and are popular in black and light brown colors.
