This month, the Mountain Lakes Girls Volleyball team continued to show off their immense skills during their season. Many of their Girls Volleyball players reached amazing milestones. Starting Varsity Libero (a defensive player who focuses on passing, digging, and ball control), Sophomore Lucia Cina reached a monumental 100 season digs against Kinnelon. As of October 24th, Cina has a total of 207 digs this season and 260 career digs. In addition, Varsity Sophomore Zoie Feit, Junior Lyla Wills, and Senior Karly Ross also achieved 100 digs this season. Setter, Senior Charlotte Caggiano now has a high number of 243 season assists. Juniors Bulgari Kancheva and Siena Bednar continued to dominate as Middles and Outside Hitters. Due to their outstanding performance last year, Mountain Lakes’ girls’ volleyball team has been leveled up to a higher division where they still continue to play their game. They cemented their strength by pulling off wins against Mendham (2-0), Jefferson (2-1), and High Point (2-0).
October 8th was Mountain Lakes’ annual Girls Volleyball Senior Night, where the Lakers faced off against High Point Regional High School. The main gym was arrayed with posters, balloons, and decorations to commemorate the Senior Volleyball players. Family and friends of seniors Karly Ross, Charlotte Caggiano, Divsha Arora, Issabelle Woodlee, Noelle Zollner, and Jamie Polachek all came out to support the team and witness a big night for these young girls.

During the ceremony, head coach Linda Petrozelli-Lentz spoke about each senior’s tremendous impact to the program through their dedication, hard work, and leadership. She also credited captains Ross and Caggiano as role models who show underclassmen and future players what it means to be a Laker. Finally, to end the monumental night, the Lakers were able to pull off a dominating victory, winning the game 2-0.
The month of October is celebrated around the country as breast cancer awareness month, so as a tribute to those who have fought with breast cancer, the girls volleyball team takes part with the Side Out Foundation. In volleyball, the term “side-out” means to regain control of the ball, so, the Side Out Foundation used that term but for breast cancer patients to regain control of their lives.

Many volleyball teams across the US have Dig Pink events to raise money for the Sideout Foundation, where the money ultimately goes to research facilities for breast cancer. On October 15, the MLHS Girls Volleyball team had their very own Dig Pink game against Hanover Park. Members of varsity, JV, and freshmen had pink jerseys with their last name and number on it. On every ML Dig Pink jersey, there is the number 22 on the back. This represents the head coach Linda Petrozelli-Lentz’s sister’s number. Coach Lentz’s younger sister had passed away from breast cancer in 2011, so to honor her, the girls volleyball team always have worn #22 (her volleyball number) on the back of the jerseys as commemoration. The team also had a Dig Pink bake sale, which was filled with delicious homemade treats from the team. The bake sale was very successful, and the money contributed to their research facility, which has been recognized by many well known cancer institutes, such as AACR and PHRMA.
