Read Time:1 Minute, 26 Second

On January 12th, 2017, members of the NHS traveled to the Newark Boys and Girls Club. Now a longstanding tradition, the v isit was planned with the intent of both sharing our college-preparedness resources and forming a real friendship with our peers in Newark.

On the trip, we were greeted by Mr. Chris Crockett, the manager of teen services, and many Newark teens who filtered in alongside us. In a circle discussion, everyone shared post-secondary goals and speculated on the obstacles that lie in the way of life after high school; the most common roadblocks appeared to be finances and uncertainty about what one wants to do once they enter “The Real World.”

After “college-talk,” we had some pizza and explored the Clubhouse, which was originally built in 1971 and most recently renovated in 2015. In the chicly outfitted teen room, there was a drumset, several guitars, an entire DJ setup, xBox consoles, televisions, couches, and (of course) college prep books. Upstairs were classrooms for younger kids, as well as a dance studio and a gymnasium where we played catch with some of the younger kids and knock-out with the ones our age.

Back downstairs, we took a group photo (and a group selfie of course!) and started planning future visits to Newark and opportunities for our new friends to visit Mountain Lakes. This acquaintanceship-turned-friendship will not only introduce the students involved to socio-economic diversity, even within a 30 mile radius, but will also reveal the trials and tribulations that come with certain lifestyles. Through this partnership, we hope to foster empathy, support, and kindness, as well as a sharing of resources and experiences. Stay tuned for the next NHS visit!
